The Coronavirus ( COVID-19) which originated in Wuhan, China, is spreading rapidly throughout multiple countries, including the United States. Coronavirus ( COVID-19) cases can now be found in seven states including Arizona, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin. There are 57 cases of coronavirus in the United States as of February 26, 2020. Both the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are issuing warnings about the coronavirus, and urging people to take precautions. The coronavirus currently has a fatality rate of 2 percent, in comparison to a rate of .08 percent fatality rates for regular influenza (flu). The coronavirus ( COVID-19) affects the respiratory tract and can lead to pneumonia and SARS. Some of the symptoms of coronavirus imitate both the cold and flu and include fever, coughing and difficulty breathing. The vast majority of coronavirus cases are mild (the CDC reports up to 80%),

Pandemic Pandemonium

The word pandemic strikes fear into the hearts of most of us. We hear this word an immediately think of a deadly virus that spreads like wildfire, killing off populations of people mercilessly. Unfortunately, this analogy is true to some degree. A pandemic is basically an alteration in an existing virus that has caused a mutation or subtype of the viral species to occur. This can lead to epidemics because they are spread easily among the populace. Are Hospitals in the United States Prepared for Ebola?

The Dallas nurse who contracted Ebola while caring for Thomas Eric Duncan, the first known Ebola patient in the United States, is doing better. Nina Pham contracted Ebola while working at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in the intensive care unit. The hospital is under scrutiny as allegations of insufficient sanitation practices emerge in the wake of Pham’s diagnosis. One of the most blatant mistakes the hospital made was telling Thomas Eric Duncan to go home when he initially came to the hospital complaining of symptoms. A nurse who took Duncan’s information noted that Duncan was from a “virus zone,” however, the hospital claimed a software error led to the Liberian man’s discharge. Duncan returned two days later, and ultimately died from the Ebola virus. By that time, dozens of other people had been exposed the deadly disease. Due to the continued spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a new Level 3 Travel Warning for South Korea . The travel restrictions issued by the U.S. Department of State for China remain at Level 4: Do Not Travel to China . Other Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution warnings have been issued for Japan, Iran and Italy. THINGS YOU CAN DO If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath), see your health care provider immediately. Call ahead to advise the doctor’s office of recent travel. If you have been diagnosed or have symptoms consistent with coronavirus, wear a facemask when you are in the same room with other people and when you visit your healthcare provider. Actions that help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses include: Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; if soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer Avoid

Can Mosquitoes Carry the H1N1 Swine Flu Virus?

Do mosquitoes carry the H1N1 Swine flu virus? Most researchers say that at this point it is not likely. Mosquitoes do not usually carry the flu virus, however, mosquitoes have been host to a number of other deadly viruses including the West Nile virus, St Louis Encephalitis, and Malaria to name a few.There have been no reported cases of the H1N1 Swine Flu virus being transmitted by mosquitoes, but taking precautions cannot hurt. Euthanize Animals Exposed to the Ebola Virus?

Should Animals Exposed to the Ebola Virus be Immediately Euthanized? A woman in Madrid, Spain was the first to be infected with the Ebola virus in the region. Maria Teresa Romero Ramos, who is 40 years old, was infected while acting as a caregiver for infected priests who had contracted the virus while working in West Africa. Although Romero-Ramos wore protective clothing while treating the priests, and is only known to have entered the room where they were being treated a couple of times, she still someone contracted the Ebola virus. She told reporters for El Pais, a Spanish newspaper, that she might have contracted the virus while removing her protective gear. No further details are known at this time about how she may have become infected. Sadly, her dog, Excalibur was also exposed to the Ebola virus. Ebola can be transmitted to, and carried by, animals. Romero-Ramos reported "hanging out" with her dog for up to a week while she was stricken with fever. T
