I currently work at a school in South Florida, and I am noticing a pattern of complacency when it comes to the Swine flu virus and it's possibilities for transmission. We all know that the Swine flu is spreading like wildfire, but people are still obviously in denial. I have seen teachers leaving the restroom without washing their hands numerous times, even since the news of this outbreak. People are laughing and joking about the virus, seemingly unworried about the possibility of contagion amongst their particular population. Should You Go on a Cruise While the Swine Flu Runs Rampant?

If you are going on a cruise, you may want to rethink your plans. Cruises are a hotbed of viruses and bacteria that grow and reproduce due to the unique conditons of moisture and containment. Cruises might be most dangerous because of the confinement issues involved with being on a cruise ship. If you must take your trip, wash hands constantly and use alcohol based gels while on the ship. Avian Influenza H7N9: A Threat to Humans?

Avian Influenza (H7N9) is a new flu virus that is making headlines in China. Although most cases in humans have been detected in people who have had contact with chickens, there have been recent updates that have led scientists to believe an H7N9 outbreak may be imminent in the human population. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), there have been confirmed cases of poultry passing the virus between each other. Because this indicates mammal to mammal transmission, there is a possibility transmission of the H7N9 Avian flu could occur among humans. With Swine Flu cases on the rise, it is inevitable that our children will be affected by the news. Hundreds on New York City school children have recently become ill, although as of this posting they have not been confirmed as having swine flu. A State of Emergency

A state of emergency has been declared in California because of the Swine flu, and hundreds of children in New York City are infected with what is believed to be the Swine flu. Not everyone is being tested because labs would be overwhelmed. Schools have been closed to perform cleanup before children can return. The majority of the infected are teenagers. The flu symptoms still continue to be mild. For those who get really ill it is caused by an overreaction of the immune system which leads to the body attacking itself.Tamiflu is being given to those who really need it, but regular medications are encouraged so a resistance of Tamiflu is not promoted. The Swine flu appears to be very mild for most Americans, but the Mexican people have been devastated by this virus.

Another Death from Enterovirus EV-D68

Enterovirus has claimed another life. A 21 month old girl in Michigan is the second person in the United States to die from Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68). The little girl was being treated for the disease at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, located in Detroit, where she died Friday night. She is the first fatality in Michigan that can be attributed to EV-D68. Earlier in the week, 4 year old Eli Waller of New Jersey died in his sleep. His death was linked to the Enterovirus diet and complications from a strep infection. The little boy had been ill, but appeared to be doing better on the night that he died. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), non-polio enteroviruses are very common and can infect anyone. In most people, the virus will only cause mild cold symptoms, however, those with weaker immune systems, and those who are very old or very young, may develop more serious complications. UPDATE: Dallas Sheriff does not have Ebola! There is a plan to stop the spread of Ebola. Today officials are planning to stop Ebola with a new layer of protection by using low touch thermometers on up to 150 passengers. Screening will begin at Washington Dulles, Atlanta, and O’Hare in Chicago and JFK in Newark New Jersey. The most recent possible case of Ebola is the Dallas County Sheriff’s deputy who visited the home of Thomas Eric Duncan. He and two other officers, Zachary Thompson and Christopher Perkins, went unprotected to the scene. Sgt. Michael Monnig visited an urgent care office in Frisco, Texas complaining of stomach pain a week after the visit to Duncan’s home. To date, no others who were in contact with Duncan have shown any sign of infection, and the police officer who is exhibiting flu-like symptoms has not been confirmed to have the disease. Why is No-One Dying in the United States?

The lack of deaths here in the United States has experts wondering what has changed the virus to make it less fatal among the American population. Many scientists and doctors believe that people dying in Mexico could be suffering from secondary infectiions such as diabetes or heart disease that make them more susceptible to the virus. It might also be be another viral infection in addition to the H1N1 that is creating a more deadly combination. Finally, the pollution or lack of adequate health care could contribute greatly to the fatalities. It does appear that the number of cases is stabilizing in Mexico as more infected individuals are administered antiviral medications such as Tamiflu in a timely manner.
